In the fall of 1963, San Jose State University and Bud Winter hosted Arthur Lydiard to give a speech to athletes, coaches and professors.
Arthur Lydaird needs no introduction. Three of his athletes medalled in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome: Murray Halberg, Peter Snell and Barry Magee. Peter Snell went on to win double-gold at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in the 800 and 1500 meters.
Athletes subsequently coached by him or influenced by his coaching methods included Rod Dixon, John Walker, and Dick Quax.

In 1966, Lydiard accepted an invitation arranged through Bud Winter to work in Mexico and stayed about 8 months. His coaching influence can be highlighted by the success of Finland at the 1972 Munich Olympics capturing 3 golds and 1 bronze in the 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m and steeplechase.
